Stepping into Summer // Dr. Martens

(Features press samples & affiliate links - see disclaimer)

The sun is shining, the temperature is warming up and we've gone quite a few days without any rain which means Summer should be right around the corner, and what better way to celebrate the next season than with a little something-something to freshen up your wardrobe!

I don't know about you but I like to get my feet Summer ready each year so the first thing I do is make an appointment for a pedicure, have my nails painted and choose some fabulous footwear so my feet can breathe - this year my choice has been Dr.Martens and I am beyond excited because I've wanted a pair for so long, I just wasn't sure they were very me.

Well... to hell with that, I'm wearing what I want this Summer and I can't wait!

Dr. Martens have a long and extensive history, starting in 1901. The Griggs family were known for making boots in the small town of Wollaston, Northamptonshire in the English Midlands - They were at the very heart of the English shoe industry and for six decades Griggs’ footwear earned a solid reputation as sturdy, durable work boots.

The story then switched to post-war Munich in 1945 and Dr. Klaus Maertens, a 25-year-old soldier. While convalescing from a broken foot he created a unique air-cushioned sole (rather than the traditional hard leather sole) to aid his recovery. Using a salvaged cobbler's last and a needle, Maertens made a prototype shoe and showed it to an old university friend and mechanical engineer, Dr. Herbert Funk. The two went into partnership by using disused military supplies to begin producing their unique shoes.

Back in England, the Griggs company was now being run by the third generation of the family, Bill, along with brothers Ray, Colin and son Max. Whilst scanning the pages of a shoe trade magazine, Bill's eye was caught by the German's advert for their innovative air- cushioned sole.

An exclusive license was acquired plus a few key changes made and then taking its name from date of its inception, April 1st, 1960, the eight-holed 1460 Dr. Martens boot had arrived and the rest they say is history...

You can read more about the history of Dr.Martens on their website - drmartens.com.

From sturdy boots and fun styles to the original boot and sandals, there is something for everyone and Dr. Martens women's sandals have all the hallmarks of signature DM's style! Think rugged material, yellow welt stitching and their recognisable sole.

The Gryphon Quad Platform Sandals are what caught my eye and I am in LOVE! Dr.Martens reinvented their Gryphon sandal for the new season and this is what they came up with. The sandals now stand on a high-rise quad sole and is manufactored from sofa Pisa leather and paired with brass hardware and includes yellow welt stitching and an AirWair heel loop.

I was surprised at how heavy they are but they don't feel it when walking in them thankfully - the front strap is quite narrow but I can get my wide feet in there comfortably. They're not quite broken in yet but with a few goes around the house and some socks I'll be fine. I'm really pleased with them.

There is such a great range of styles available including limited edition collections and vegan leather, I already have my eye on the Myles Slip-On Sandals next!

All styles are available online at drmartens.com or instores now.

What style would you choose?
